Equine Services

Wellness care: "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" That saying holds true for horses also. As part of our routine care we provide vaccinations, deworming programs, Coggins testing, fecal exams and dental care. At the time of service we can discuss any issues you may have with your horse including nutritional needs, training programs, geriatric care, etc..

Time of need care: We offer care for your horse in case of medical colic, sickness, lameness, injury, metabolic problems, or chronic illness. We are equipped to provide treatment for your horse on the farm or in the clinic. There may be times when  more specialized care or emergencies will recquire your horse to be brought to our clinic. If needed, transportation for your horse can be arranged. Emergency care for our regular clients is provided on a 24 hour basis.

Pre-purchase examinations: An extensive physical examination, lameness evaluation, neurologic examination, reproductive exam and drug screen is offered by us prior to purchasing a horse. The exam often includes laboratory testing, radiographs, endoscopy, and ultrasound exams. The exam will be tailored to the needs of the client. The infornation gathered is used by the prospective buyer and/or agent to determine whether the horse will be servicable for it's intended use.

Geriatric care: Due to improvement in nutrition, management and health care, horses are living longer, more useful lives. Proper care will help your older horse thrive. Aged horses can have sub-clinical health care issues that can be identified and treated before it becomes a problem. If your horse is over 15 years of age we recommend a complete physical examination, dental examination and blood testing. Contact HVS to develope a total management plan for you senior horse.

Lameness examination: Evaluate the locomotion of your horse. We use a variety of techniques to identify the source(s) of lameness including physical examination and palpation, flexion tests, and joint and nerve blocks. Radiographs, ultrasound, and laboratory tests help us to further evaluate the source of your horse's lameness.

Surgery: Surgery on your horse may be performed standing under sedation and/or local anesthesia, or recumbent (laying down) under general anesthesia. We offer surgery for laceration repair, castration, umbilical hernia repair, cryptorchid surgery, mass removal, biopsy, etcetera. More complicated procedures can be referred to a specialist, or a board certified surgeon may operate at HVS.

Reproduction: Horizon Veterinary Service offers complete equine reproductive services. For stallions, we offer semen collection and evaluation. We recommend this prior to or during the breeding season to evaluate your stallion’s fertility whether you are breeding naturally on the farm, artificially or wanting to transport cooled semen. For mares, we perform complete reproductive examinations including ultrasonography, vaginal examination, uterine culture, uterine biopsy and hormone evaluation. If you are interested in breeding your mare with cooled, transported semen or frozen semen, we can take care of all the arrangements and procedures.

Ultrasonography: uses sound waves to evaluate soft tissues like tendons and ligaments, reproductive organs, lumps, and tumors. It is painless and non-invasive. HVS has a digital ultrasound in addition to a reproductive ultrasound. This diagnostic tool is painless and noninvasive.

Radiography: uses x-rays to visualize bone for abnormalities including arthritic changes, fractures, ocd, bone cysts and bone infection.

Endoscopy: utilizes a fiber optic device for evaluating the upper airway of the horse, including the larynx, sinuses and guttural pouches. The trachea and upper esophagus can also be examined with this flexible device. Useful in prepurchase examinations, pneumonias, or reactive airway disease. The endoscope can also be used to evaluate mares who are problem breeders.
